Specific Learning Disabilities

Specific Learning Disabilities are neurological processing deficits that can make learning how to read, do math, spell, or understand a written paragraph very difficult. Dyslexia, for example, is a broad catch all term used to describe “difficulty reading” (Dys = poor or bad; Lexia = reading) that can come from poor auditory processing (hearing the sounds of each letter (Phoneme)) or visual processing (how we see/interpret letters) abilities. Oftentimes these “learning issues” are first encountered when students go from learning to read (K-2) to reading to learn (3rd and 4th) but can arise at any point when the student’s abilities are significantly outpaced by the amount of information they need to process.
